- Additive principle: The total value of the number is the sum of the values of the individual digits. The number 486 is the sum of 400 + 80 + 6.
- Multiplicative principle: Each digit in a number indicates how many bundles of that magnitude there are. Thus the 8 in the number 486 stands for eight bundles of ten.
- Bundling principle: The decimal place value system is based on the base number 10, i.e. ten elements of each unit are combined to form one element of the next larger unit. The values of the digits thus increase tenfold from right to left.
